nATURE:LANDSCAPE SERIES

I think of the beach as a respite, a place where the mind can wander and cares melt away. In this recent work, the deliberate blur of the waves and water soothes the senses and allows one the time to escape, feel the calm and laze in the dream like surf.

URBAN: CITY BEAT SERIES

THE CITY BEAT SERIES IS ABOUT THE PULSE OF THE BIG CITY. i ENJOY SHOOTING THE CITY AT NIGHT WHEN THE LIGHTS COME ON AND EVERYTHING IS ALIVE. IN THIS NEW PIECE,  MOVEMENT AND VIBRANCE ARE THE CENTRAL THEME AND THE TRAILING LIGHTS SHOWCASE THE FLOW AND ACTIVITY THAT IS EVER PRESENT.

Laying out the piece

as simple as it might seem, making the right color or the right texture is way more complex than you might imagine. Then add in sizing and fitting it all and you’ve got a real challenge to make the piece work in a harmonious and pleasing way. It’s not easy but I do enjoy the challenge!

Making the wax

Rather than buying the wax medium, I prefer to buy from a bee keeping supplier here in Texas. The smell is amazing!

the Wax needs something to make it hard and there are many, but damar resin is the bset. What makes Damar crystals so special is their very high refractive index. Damar resin is also prized for incense use. It is said to lift the spirit, combat sadness and melancholy, bringing light to the soul . maybe that’s a good reason to make it!

The resin improves the workability of the wax by increasing its melting point. Damar resin gives the wax the varnish-like optical property of showing high saturated colors underneath it.

Damar is a clear pale yellow natural resin obtained by “sweated-out” of trees growing in rain forest areas. The tree is an object of worship for Buddhist and Hindus in India.

Getting into nature

exploring new places is what makes for great inspiration. Whether it’s photographs, painting or sculpting-nothing is more inspiring that being in nature.
